Activist is a Mānuka honey company founded by husband-and-wife team Luke Harwood and Gabrielle Mirkin. Their shared passion for the earth and natural products can be traced to their childhoods in New Zealand.
Luke's love of surfing and the native coastal land of New Zealand led him to understand the vital role that bees play as environmental indicators. This discovery served as the founding catalyst for Activist.
Gabrielle's time in New York City, working as a senior art director at Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, led to a slowdown and pursuit of new interests beyond of the fast-paced world of fashion publications. Her love of radiant health, natural healing therapies and food from the earth was a central driver for the development of Activist.
Splitting our time between California and New Zealand, we have built a natural and transparent family-owned and -operated company as an extension of our lifestyle. Our far-reaching involvement in Activist spans establishing relationships with their beekeepers (we even surf together!) and pushing the boundaries of product innovation, all while building direct connections with customers and global retailers. We strongly believe that New Zealand and its resources should be represented authentically on a global scale, rather than being sold off to international companies to be rebranded and diluted. If that means building a slower-growing, sustainable business, that’s cool with us.
